Medium is still the best platform out there

Most of us wanted to have blogs. It feels like finally we have become business owners.

I always wanted to have multiple blogs under various niches. The idea was exciting at that time. I thought if no one will be able to find my self-published books then I’ll just start writing somewhere. I didn’t know much about social media back then because all the YouTube I watched always only talked about having your own blogs.

All these bloggers who inspired me were having more than 10 blogs. I cannot have that much. For me, two or three is enough.

After the pandemic, since YouTube came to rise, things have drastically changed.

What is required to start your own WordPress Blogs (Writers/Bloggers) -

  1. The niche of your interest. It is a niche that excites you and you like to read and learn about.

  2. Domain for having an identity on the internet.

  3. Hosting — Host your website on a server

  4. Website theme/designing — This takes most of the time and sometimes money as well.

  5. Newsletter — To collect emails from your audience or readers.

So that’s actually a lot. And then not to forget that you have to drive traffic to the blogs as well. Either you use SEO or social media platforms to drive traffic to your blogs.

So you can see, it’s actually a lot of stuff to do.

So when will you get time to write quality content if these many things consume your time?

This got me stuck and was the number one reason I came to Medium. Before the pandemic, I never knew much about social media platforms except Facebook (Only because it was popular during my college time).

Mistakes that new writers make -

  1. Purchasing hosting at an early stage (buying a domain is okay. Good hosting requires more money).

  2. Not promoting themselves and their products on social media.

  3. Underestimating the power of the distributed system. (This mistake I did too!)

Having a single website is a lot of work. It’s not easy and most chances that you will do a lot but it won’t get you anywhere. There is a reason why we have so many SEO tools and even SEO consultants out there. It’s not easy!

What writers and bloggers should do?

  1. Start with one social media platform based on your niche. If finance is a famous topic on Medium then beauty is famous on Instagram. Find your community.

  2. Pay attention to quality content.

  3. Get rid of SEO at the start. Don’t bother too much about it. It takes a lot of time and money. SEO tools are expensive.

  4. Do not pay attention to the audience or why you are not getting traffic. You need good-quality content to drive traffic.

  5. Don’t do two things at the same time. I have been trying to do it for many years and still fail. Pick one thing at a time.

  6. Buy a domain name for your blogs. No hosting for now but buying domains is cheap. I have mine from GoDaddy and Namecheap. Dynadot is also a cheap option.

Conclusion

So this is all! Handling two websites at the same time is making me crazy right now. It affects writing a lot. The solution to use free blogging platform first. ex - Medium

  • No money required

  • already large audience base

  • different earning potential (MPP, affiliate marketing, newsletter, ebooks, freelancing etc)

  • Easy to manage (pay all attention to writing!)

Once you start making money from your Medium account, use the money later for your websites. I don’t see any other solution for that!

See you soon!
